Telnet to pmcmoo.org 1k+1 (#8996) [WebbyRoom (#7887) ]

This virtual community has gone through three iterations of development. The first iteration, PMC-MOO, was undertaken when moo was first under development. The world wide web did not exist, character based terminals were widespread and graduate students would try anything to escape into a virtual existence. The moo ran on a DEC alpha running OSF/1 ! Despite such primative equipment, the world was created and became a lively center of internet activity. Much of what was done then is only recalled in mythical terms. For example the ongoing discussions of Guy Debord's Society of the Spectacle

The second iteration, PMC2, was an attempted transformation of the world that lead to widespread dysphoria and diaspora.

With the passage of time a third iteration, 1k+1, of development emerged, like a shiny barracuda in an ocean of internet participation. Some folks come from nostalgia, some from class, others to while away the time until a remote server comes back online.
